The Second Challenge

Thursday 20th November to Friday 21st November

 Task Brief

Day 3 and Day 4

The second task will be spread over 2 days, culminating with a full day of trading on Parliament Street as part of the market. On the market you will be selling artwork from a selection of three York based artists/designers all with the common theme of children’s art. The team that makes the most money selling the art will be declared the winner and receive £750 prize money.

During the first day of the challenge you will meet with the three artists/designers we have provided who all specialise in different areas of work. After they have given their presentations about who they and what their art stands for, it will be up to you to decide which artist’s work you wish to sell. Deciding this will be done via a silent auction.

Each artist is providing £280 (retail value) worth of art for you sell, this will mean that you will have to exceed this amount to be in profit. Your starting amount on trading day is -£280 and how much you have spent on that particular artist at the silent auction will also be deducted.

There will also be a silent auction to decide which market stalls go to which team. As each stall is on Parliament Street, the stall you want is purely subjective and there no huge differences between them.

Today (Thursday) you will have time to work with the artists/designers and will have £15 to spend on the stall. You will need to provide receipts for this. Anything else

you can gather for free is acceptable  but you will need to provide evidence of its origin (a note from the seller/donator).

As you will be selling to members of the public there are special rules and regulations that MUST be abided by, these can be found in the Rules Section of this information pack.

This challenge will test not only your sales skills but how you prioritise your money, budget and how well you work with your designated artist/designer.

The final figure that will indicate your profit will be the initial £280 minus the amount you spent on the artist and stall plus the figure you sold the items for. Any items not sold will be kept as an overhead at their retail worth. All work will come with recommended retail prices for each product, but this will be kept behind the stall by each team, as you can charge what you like to ensure a profit!

Remember – know your artist/designer, know your product and your prices or you will find yourselves come unstuck at the end of the day.
